Stop what you’re doing and listen to this.
The song. The video.
THIS is what American pop is missing! The quirk! Tovey brings the HOOKS but she’s not about drinking and partying, she’s about “sex clubs” and barfing up Twinkies! The U.S. pop scene is pretty dead right now with so many of the girls taking their sweet time to drop new music (Katy, Gaga, Beyosaurus, Miley, Demi……….Avril?), so I am getting my LIFE from these catchy Swedish bops.
I’m not sure if Tove is working on an album or what, but she’s got an official Soundcloud where you can stream a couple of songs. They’re not as good as “Habits,” but they’re definitely worth a listen.
There’s a rumor going around that Katy Perry will be featured on Icona Pop’s new single. Icona Pop’s “I Love It” is just now starting to take off in the U.S., so it would be a strange move to confuse radio with a new single so soon, especially one with Katy’s name attached to it. Does “new single” just mean a remix of “I Love It”? Or is it truly a new song? So many questions and no answers at this point, but obviously I’ll be following this rumor closely!

I was little surprised this evening to see Nickelodeon star Ariana Grande’s latest single “The Way” sitting in the number two spot on iTunes. The feel-good 90’s influenced track is a smooth listen despite a sleepy guest feature from rapper Mac Miller. It’s a lot of fun to hear Ariana do her best early Mariah impression, but honestly, it’s the nostalgia-inducing Big Pun sample that steals the show. It’s nice to see a mid-tempo R&B track near the top of the iTunes charts. It’ll be interesting to see how long Ariana can maintain her position. Check out the song below!

If this random Twitter user is to be believed, Selena Gomez’s new single “Come & Get It” is produced by Norwegian duo Stargate and written by Ester Dean. Stargate and Ester have been making hits together for a minute (Rihanna’s “Rude Boy,” “What’s My Name?,” “S&M,” “Where Have You Been,” and Katy’s “Firework”), so if this is true…
“Be Like You” embodies everything I love about Swedish pop: it’s big, it’s loud, it’s emotional – it holds nothing back. It’s actually very reminiscent of Laura Fabian’s legendary power ballad, “I Will Love Again.” I love a good chorus I can shout along to.
Linda Pritchard is a Swedish Idol and Melodifestivalen alum (the music competition that determines Sweden’s annual Eurovision entry). “Be Like You” is her first release in two years. It’s unknown whether “Be Like You” is from an upcoming studio album or if it’s just a one-off single release, but she’s definitely piqued my interest!

If “See You Again” doesn’t make you want to drive 80 miles per hour down an open country road with the wind blowing through your hair, quietly sobbing…I will eat my hat. “See You Again” is the fourth single to be lifted from Carrie’s 2012 album “Blown Away,” and it’s a sentimental country-pop record with a stadium-sized chorus and the most crossover appeal since “Before He Cheats.” Continue reading
I’m obsessed with this happy little number that celebrates the power of saying, “F*** you!!” to anonymous internet trolls. “Slouched behind a keyboard, your fingertips are nails. I bet face to face your social skills surprisingly fail…” Continue reading
Even at only 11 tracks, “The 20/20 Experience” is still too long. Admittedly, the album just isn’t designed for the way I consume music (I have a short attention span and I firmly believe that the perfect pop song is around three minutes and thirty seconds), but some of these tracks are just ridiculous. Jessica Sanchez and Ne-Yo stopped by American Idol this week to perform their new single, “Tonight.” You may remember that I reviewed an underwater recording of “Tonight” a couple of weeks ago, but now we finally have the song in high quality. And it’s a total smash. Continue reading
