New Music: Ke$ha’s “Woo Hoo” finally leaks in full

Ke$ha's "Woo Hoo" streaming free

On Tuesday last week, my prayers were finally answered.  After almost a full year of torture, Ke$ha’s ill-fated lead-single-to-be, “Woo Hoo” has finally leaked in full high quality.  And it’s glorious.

For those of you who don’t know, the story goes something like this: Ke$ha’s vision for her second LP was “cock pop” – brazen, sexually-charged pop music with a rock tinge.  After logging some studio time with pop rock producer Matt Squire (3OH!3, One Direction) and up-and-comer Bei Maejor, Ke$ha finally had a lead single.  And it was “Woo Hoo.”  And it combined the bouncy dance pop sound of “Tik Tok” with Ke$ha’s trademark over-the-top lyricism about partying and not giving a f—.  And it was amazing.  But the label wasn’t down and the instrumental was promptly given to a Nickelodeon band so that it could be watered down for the Radio Disney crowd.

Ultimately, this meant that Ke$ha was back in the studio for months longer than originally planned and her fans got pissed.  When “Warrior” finally emerged in December, it was a solid pop album (one of 2012’s best), but too many tracks were missing Ke$ha’s trademark attitude.  And no song was more neutered than replacement lead single, “Die Young.”  Sure, “Die Young” went on to become a pretty big hit (peaking at #2 on the Hot 100), but the verses were unremarkable, the production reeked of lazy “Good Feeling” rehashing by producer Dr. Luke, and the sauciest Ms. Sebert was allowed to get was, “That magic in your pants, it’s making me blush.”  Contrast that with “Woo Hoo”’s unforgettable, “I’ll tag team Bert & Ernie” or, “Suck my dick, while I flip the bird” and you can see just how far apart the two songs really are.

Hearing “Woo Hoo” in full makes me pine for what might have been had Ke$ha been allowed to explore her original cock pop vision.  The song has a killer hook and an explosive energy (thanks in part to the “Song 2” sample) that would definitely be a force to be reckoned with on the radio and on the charts.

But coulda woulda shoulda, I guess.  It’s all in the past.  So enjoy “Woo Hoo” for what it is – another one of Ke$ha’s awesome unreleased songs (alongside “Booty Call” and “Shots on the Hood of My Car”).  Right now I’m just hoping that the “Warrior” era can be saved with a smash third single (“Thinking of You” or “Crazy Kids,” please!) so Ke$ha can get back into the studio ASAP.  If she’s smart, she’ll release new music in a year, but that’s another story for another day.
