The rumor was true! The lead single from Katy Perry’s upcoming “Prism” album is called “Roar”! Katy made the official announcement this morning via a teaser video posted to her VEVO account. The 30-second clip opens in total darkness – then there’s the flick of a lighter, illuminating Katy’s face. But it’s not the bright and colorful Katy we’ve come to know from the “Teenage Dream” era – she’s different now, she’s changed. Without blinking an eye, Katy raises the lighter and sets fire to her now iconic “California Gurls” blue wig and watches, satisfied, as it BURNS TO ASHES. And then “#ROAR” and the release date of August 12th hit the screen in leopard print font. Whew.
Okay, so it’s not very subtle, but it is kind of bad ass. Candy Land Katy is dead and gone – alternative/SERIOUS ARTIST Katy is here to STAY. And so the question remains: is “Roar” Katy’s next #1 single? Her last lead single, “Part of Me,” debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart after an explosive live Grammy performance – but the rules have changed. Now, a song’s popularity on streaming services like Spotify and YouTube plays a critical role in its Hot 100 placement, making it much more difficult for a new release to debut at the top. But there’s nothing wrong with a steady climb to the summit, and I have no doubt that Katy and record label Capitol are up to the challenge.
In order to build some streaming points, Katy’s opted to release “Roar” a week ahead of Lady Gaga’s new single “Applause,” though both songs will probably have a hard time conquering Robin Thicke’s massive summer hit “Blurred Lines.” But I’m getting ahead of myself – how does “Roar” sound?? All of this chart talk is useless if the music isn’t good. I’m dying to know how Katy and collaborators Dr. Luke and Max Martin have evolved her sound. Senior Vice President of A&R at Island Def Jam Chris Anokute tweeted a few days ago that Katy will “change the sound of mainstream radio once again” with “Prism.” I hope he’s right!
Ahh, pop music is finally getting interesting again. Check out Katy’s first “Roar” teaser video below – there are more to come. August 12th can’t get here soon enough.
