The video for Lady Gaga’s new single, “Applause” dropped this morning and it’s just as flashy and bizarre as you expected. I haven’t really enjoyed a Lady Gaga music video since “Bad Romance” (it’s a tough standard to live up to), so I wasn’t expecting much from “Applause,” but it has its moments. Highlights include Gaga’s head on a swan’s body, a Tim Burton-esque Marilyn Monroe character, and a brief but awesome bit of choreography – clearly her squeaky hip’s as good as new!
“Applause” is currently under-performing on iTunes, but I think that will change after Gaga’s upcoming VMA performance – I’m sure she’ll knock it out of the park. Still, I just don’t know how much the general public is interested in a song about how much Gaga loves that her fans love her…and where she demands that they love her more and MORE. It’s just kind of off-putting and not very easy to relate to. On the other hand, Katy Perry served up a totally safe, been-there-done-that inspirational anthem with “Roar” (which I now love), and it’s totally smashing. People like to think that songs are about them, and it’s easy to imagine that “Roar” is your own personal theme song when you’re belting out the chorus at the top of your lungs. We’ll see if Gaga is able to rebound in the coming weeks.
Check out the “Applause” music video above. What do you think – did Gaga deliver another avant-garde masterpiece? Or do her antics fall flat?
