Okay, so I promise that I’m not going to post EVERY song from Katy Perry’s new “PRISM” album (my full album review is coming soon), but this one’s just too good to pass up. In an album made up of predominately thoughtful and reflective mid-tempo pop songs, “Birthday” stands out like…well, like Katy Perry in her birthday suit!
The SNL house band provides the peppy backing for this roller rink disco track about Katy pulling out all the stops to make every day like a birthday party for her man. Co-written with Bonnie McKee and produced again by the dream team of Dr. Luke, Max Martin, and Cirkut, “Birthday” sparkles with an effervescent energy and is chock full of flirty double entendres and tongue-in-cheek wordplay (“Pop your confetti…I know you like it sweet, so you can have your cake”). At the “PRISM” listening party in New York last month, Perry shared that she wanted “Birthday” to sound like “something Mariah Carey would have put on her first record,” and she definitely succeeds, especially as she shows off some Mariah-esque ab-libs over the track’s final chorus (though I would contend that Carey’s never recorded a track that’s this much fun). In fact, it’s pretty much impossible to listen to “Birthday” without breaking out into a cheesy grin. Just try and keep a straight face when Katy, doing her best Marilyn Monroe impression, coos, “Happy Birthday…” during the bridge, just before busting out the song’s best line: “So let me get you in your birthday suit, it’s time to bring out the big balloons!” Are you kidding me?? I’m in heaven. Yes, it’s a little campy and ridiculous. Okay, a lot campy and ridiculous – but that’s part of what makes Katy Perry so loveable! She’s not afraid to be over-the-top (see: the “Last Friday Night” music video), but she’s always in on the joke, so you don’t have to feel bad about taking her hand and going along for the ride.
“Birthday” is now streaming for free on Katy Perry’s official website, along with the rest of “PRISM”! So do yourself a favor and check it out. Make sure to buy your copy on October 22nd!
