Swedish singer Tove Lo’s voice is fascinating – fragile one minute, roaring with confusion and youthful angst the next, it’s captivating and instantly recognizable. I’ve been keeping an eye on Tove since the release of the brilliant “Habits” back in March, and since then she’s gone on to feature on a couple of cool dance tracks (Lucas Nord’s “Run On Love” and Seven Lions’ “Strangers”), but nothing quite compares to her thrilling and arresting new single, “Out of Mind.”
Tove’s frustration with her inability to get over a former lover builds during the song’s first verse until she just blurts out, “ARE YOU KIDDING ME??” It’s a surprisingly honest emotional reaction that may catch you by surprise, but it’s the refrain during the booming chorus that will really knock the wind out of you: “You’re out of your mind to think that I can keep you out of mine.” Umm, okay, Tove, I was NOT ready for you to just rip my heart out like THAT. But after you take a moment to recover, you’ll just want to listen to “Out of Mind” over and over again. There’s something really special going on here.
Unfortunately, “Out of Mind” isn’t available in the U.S. yet, but you can check out the song and the official music video (which is pretty cool) via hillydilly here. Does Tove Lo have what it takes to become a major pop star? Let me know what you think in the comments!
