It’s time to start stanning for Robin Antin’s new girl group G.R.L., and I’ve got the top six reasons why! There were only five reasons, but then I found a sixth, VERY IMPORTANT reason, so here we go!
6. They’re signed to Dr. Luke’s record label.
G.R.L., which is made up of members Simone Battle, Emmalyn Estrada, Lauren Bennett, Natasha Slayton, and Paula Van Oppen, is signed to Dr. Luke’s record label Kemosabe Records, which means that their debut album is bound to be bursting with bubbly pop hits produced by Luke, Max Martin, and Cirkut. If you’ve spent any time on this blog at all, you know that those three gents are pop royalty and pretty much everything they touch turns to gold. The trio already produced G.R.L.’s Smurf 2 soundtrack single “Vacation,” and they produced upcoming single “Show Me What You Got” (which sounds awesome) as well!
5. One of them used to be a Paradiso Girl.
G.R.L. member Lauren Bennett used to be a part of Robin Antin’s ill-fated girl group the Paradiso Girls. All of the girls were from different countries and they sang songs about smoking blunts and throwing up. Tragically, the group disbanded in 2010 without ever releasing an album, but their legacy lives on in timeless classics like “Patron Tequila” and “Who’s My Bitch.” They were amazing. Too beautiful for this world, really.
4. They can DANCE.
G.R.L. faces an uphill battle – in this post-Pussycat Dolls world we’re living in, girl groups just aren’t really seen as relevant anymore. Maybe it’s because the ones we have are so boring. Have you seen X Factor girl group Fifth Harmony perform live? All they do is stand still, occasionally flipping their manes or stomping their hooves in unison like a pack of My Little Ponies (though there is some nice deep shoulder action). But G.R.L. can actually DANCE. Check out the break during this live performance of “Vacation”!
3. They can SING.
To a certain extent, all of the gals of G.R.L. have a musical background (Lauren Bennett was featured on LMFAO’s inescapable worldwide hit “Party Rock Anthem,” Simone Battle made it to the top 16 on the first season of X Factor, etc.), but you know as well as I do that that doesn’t necessarily mean they can deliver live. But G.R.L. can! Check out their a cappella rendition of Taylor Swift’s “I Knew You Were Trouble” below!
2. They went on a mall tour.
G.R.L. isn’t delusional, they know that they have to start at the bottom and claw their way to the top one Dr. Luke produced single at a time. They weren’t above putting on a concert at a Westfield Shoppingtown in Skokie, Illinois where most of the audience members were dads or pre-teen girls eating Auntie Anne’s pretzels. I like that. Promotion’s promotion, and G.R.L. knows how to hustle! Sure, Simone lets out one big sour note near the end that kind of sounds like childbirth, but nobody’s perfect!
And the number one reason to start stanning for G.R.L. is…
1. This guy.
You heard him first in the “Vacation” video I posted above, G.R.L.’s #1 fan got so excited at their mall show in San Diego that he started doing their choreo, enthusiastically singing along even though he only knew about 20% of the words, and loudly whooping and wooing like a drunk mom at a Brad Paisley concert. This wasn’t THAT kind of show – it took place at the mall’s fountain and there were probably less than 50 people in attendance. But that’s what G.R.L. does to you! This guy’s feeling it – and the way I see it, it’s time for the rest of us to start feeling it too!
G.R.L.’s next single “Show Me What You Got” is rumored to be released within the next few weeks.
