Do you love Beyonce’s new album but find yourself wondering, “Hey, where are all the fun, uptempo dance tracks?” Do you pine for Nelly Furtado circa 2006? Are you ready to watch a music video featuring Betty White and an obscene amount of product placement for Miracle Whip? Look no further — Timbaland’s new protege Brit Smith is here with her (sort of) debut single, “Provocative (hiDhi).”
Co-produced by Timbaland and Jerome “J-Roc” Harmon (who both worked on a handful of songs on the new Beyonce album), “Provocative” is hardly innovative, but it is super catchy and nostalgic. (It sounds exactly like 2006 — Timbaland’s heyday when pop radio was ruled by the likes of Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake.) So who the hell is Brit Smith? Well, in 2010, Brit was releasing music under the name “Matisse.” In fact, her debut single, “Better Than Her,” went #1 on Billboard’s Hot Dance Airplay chart. Then, according to Wikipedia, she released a medley of Rihanna covers on YouTube and went into hiding for three years. Now she’s back and better than ever! Well, she’s back with a catchy but dated pop song featuring will.i.am…so, she’s just back.
