Thanks to hackers and YouTube, pop fans are now able to listen to a slew of unfinished demo material that was probably never meant for public consumption. It’s great (for us…not the artists). Sometimes, a demo ends up being way more awesome than the finished product. Sometimes, a demo never sees the light of day and it’s a massive injustice! Check out a list of some of my favorite demos and unreleased jams after the jump. Continue reading
Rejoice, Britney fans! Britney Spears’s new album, “Britney Jean” is now streaming for free on iTunes! It’s a Thanksgiving miracle. My full review will be out soon – all I’ll say is that will.i.am lied about “just guiding” the album, as his electro STINK is all over it (he has production credit on 7 of the 10 songs on the standard edition). I long for Dr. Luke and Max Martin.
Stream “Britney Jean” on iTunes now! The album will be officially released in the U.S. on Tuesday, December 3rd. Check out full writing and production credits here.
Another day, another new Britney Spears leak. Early this morning, Britney’s William Orbit collaboration, “Alien” made its way online, and it’s…fine. William Orbit is perhaps best known for his work on Madonna’s critically-acclaimed album, “Ray of Light.” Fans have been clamoring for Britney to work with Orbit for years now, but I’m not so sure this is the song they were waiting for. It’s just kind of…there. Continue reading
Producer Diplo just tweeted that he co-wrote Britney’s Spears’s recently leaked song, “Passenger” with Katy Perry and Sia! That’s quite a pop songwriting trio. I thought I detected some Sia backing vocals on the track, but I was too shy to speak up! We already suspected that Katy spent some time in the studio with Sia and Diplo back in June, but when Diplo didn’t appear as a producer on Katy’s new album, “PRISM,” I just assumed that their collaborations had been left on the cutting room floor. Not so! One of their efforts, “Passenger,” was given to Britney Spears. “Passenger” may not have fit on “PRISM,” but it suits Britney quite well. In fact, I think it’s one of the most impressive songs we’ve heard from her in years!
That whole, “Britney Jean” is “my most personal record yet” business is kind of hurt by the fact that Britney apparently didn’t do any writing on “Passenger,” but no matter. It’s still an awesome song and I’m thrilled to see that it made the final track listing for the album, which was unveiled yesterday.
Thanks to the good people over at Popjustice for breaking this story AND for taking a screen shot of Diplo’s tweet, as he has since deleted it! Excellent work all around!
“Passenger,” a possible song for Britney Spears’s upcoming album “Britney Jean,” leaked online yesterday afternoon, and it’s sublime. A reliable source confirmed that the track is indeed from the “Britney Jean” recording sessions, although we don’t know yet if it will make the album’s final track listing. Continue reading
Britney Spears premiered the second single from her upcoming 8th studio album “Britney Jean” on Facebook this evening, and it’s a total home run. Co-written with Sia Furler and produced by album executive producer will.i.am, “Perfume” is a lush ballad full of piano, stirring synths, sweeping strings, and Britney’s shockingly raw vocals (well, for her standards). Seriously though, Britney Spears sounds like a human being again and there’s no trace of that strange British accent she occasionally puts on. It’s incredibly refreshing. Continue reading
Dr. Luke stans, rejoice! The pop super producer confirmed via Twitter today that he has done one song for Britney Spears’s upcoming 8th studio album, “Britney Jean.” The good doctor was short on details, only revealing that it’s a “personal” song co-written with the highly in-demand Sia Furler, but that’s certainly enough to pique my interest! Britney recently dubbed “Britney Jean” her “most personal record yet,” though you certainly wouldn’t know it by looking at floundering lead single, “Work Bitch.”
I’m glad that Dr. Luke was able to sneak at least one song onto “Britney Jean.” 2011’s “Femme Fatale,” co-executive produced by Luke & Max Martin, was a surprisingly cohesive, thoroughly enjoyable pop album – one of Britney’s best, if you ask me. It’s actually Britney’s first and only album to notch 3 consecutive top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It’s unclear what exactly has gone on between Luke and Britney’s management team since then (he was not asked back – will.i.am is handling executive producer duties this go around), but I’m excited to hear what he’s come up with!
“Britney Jean” is due out in the U.S. on December 3rd. Second single “Perfume” (also co-written with Sia) is scheduled to hit iTunes on November 5th.
After Britney Spears released her Smurf 2 soundtrack single “Ooh La La” back in July, co-writer Bonnie McKee revealed that she was brought in to the project after the song had already been written in order to make it more kid-friendly. Well, the original version of “Ooh La La” has leaked online (sung by up-and-comer Lola Blanc), and it’s a totally different, totally inappropriate, trash-filled innuendo fest. And I love it. …for the “The Smurfs 2” soundtrack. Let that sink in. Okay. The LA Times reports that even though “Ooh La La” will just be played over the end credits of the animated film, Spears has still enlisted the help of pop heavyweights Dr. Luke, Ammo, and Bonnie McKee. “The Smurfs 2” hits theaters on July 31st, so presumably the song will be out sometime shortly before then. I’m not quite sure why RCA decided to spill the beans on the track now, but okay.
On the one hand, it’s new Britney. On the other hand, it’s for “The Smurfs 2.” On the third hand, does this mean we have to wait until fall to hear the lead single from Album #8? That’s not exactly what I had in mind. Now I’m sad. But I guess I have “Ooh La La” to look forward to? In JULY??
Never mind, now I’m MAD. I’m going to need these pop girls to start acting right and release new music because one cannot survive on Avril Lavigne scraps alone!!
