Nobody loves to hype artists on Twitter more than Dr. Luke, and it’s a good thing, too! I love finding out about who the good Doctor is working with! Who could forget the day when Luke so legendarily tweeted Rihanna, “damn… you sound so good!!!!,” before anybody had any idea they were working together, setting the Internet ablaze with speculation and wonder all with a mere 29 characters??
Luke’s latest tweets about Robin Antin’s girl group G.R.L. aren’t quite as life-changing, but they’re certainly informative! Apparently, Luke’s been recording with G.R.L. since yesterday, and today, they finished up a track written by none other than Ester Dean! You may know Ester Dean from the movie, “Pitch Perfect” (she was the butt of all those tasteless lesbian jokes), but you PROBABLY know Ester Dean from her impressive list of pop super hits, like: Nicki Minaj’s “Super Bass,” Rihanna’s “What’s My Name?,” Katy Perry’s “Firework,” and Selena Gomez’s “Come & Get It.”
Ester’s worked with Robin Antin’s groups in the past, so her involvement with this project isn’t exactly unexpected, but it certainly is exciting! As I previously reported, G.R.L. has also spent time in the studio with Max Martin and Cirkut, so this is shaping up to be quite a debut! Now if only they’d release some music…
It’s time to start stanning for Robin Antin’s new girl group G.R.L., and I’ve got the top six reasons why! There were only five reasons, but then I found a sixth, VERY IMPORTANT reason, so here we go! Continue reading
Dr. Luke stans, rejoice! The pop super producer confirmed via Twitter today that he has done one song for Britney Spears’s upcoming 8th studio album, “Britney Jean.” The good doctor was short on details, only revealing that it’s a “personal” song co-written with the highly in-demand Sia Furler, but that’s certainly enough to pique my interest! Britney recently dubbed “Britney Jean” her “most personal record yet,” though you certainly wouldn’t know it by looking at floundering lead single, “Work Bitch.”
I’m glad that Dr. Luke was able to sneak at least one song onto “Britney Jean.” 2011’s “Femme Fatale,” co-executive produced by Luke & Max Martin, was a surprisingly cohesive, thoroughly enjoyable pop album – one of Britney’s best, if you ask me. It’s actually Britney’s first and only album to notch 3 consecutive top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It’s unclear what exactly has gone on between Luke and Britney’s management team since then (he was not asked back – will.i.am is handling executive producer duties this go around), but I’m excited to hear what he’s come up with!
“Britney Jean” is due out in the U.S. on December 3rd. Second single “Perfume” (also co-written with Sia) is scheduled to hit iTunes on November 5th.
Okay, so I promise that I’m not going to post EVERY song from Katy Perry’s new “PRISM” album (my full album review is coming soon), but this one’s just too good to pass up. In an album made up of predominately thoughtful and reflective mid-tempo pop songs, “Birthday” stands out like…well, like Katy Perry in her birthday suit! Continue reading
Bonnie McKee was trying to be all cute and mysterious about her upcoming lead single, promising to drop “clues” about the song via her Twitter. But what she failed to realize is that her live performance of the track already made its way online 2 weeks ago. And then Dr. Luke blew her cover completely by tweeting his congratulations to Bonnie for “making ‘American Girl’ such an amazing song !!!!”
So “American Girl,” the song which Bonnie performed live at The Hotel Cafe, is indeed the lead single from her still untitled second studio album. And that’s fantastic news. It seems that despite her blown cover, Bonnie’s still going forward with the clue game (so far she’s posted pictures of a 7/11 sign, a slurpee, and a vending machine), but she’s yet to give us a release date. In the above interview at the BMI Awards (she won 3!), Bonnie confirms that the single is coming in June, so hopefully it won’t be long now!
Jessie J blasts back onto the pop music scene with “Wild,” the lead single from the British singer’s upcoming second studio album. Co-written with Claude Kelly and produced by frequent Dr. Luke collaborator Ammo (Katy Perry’s “E.T.”), “Wild” is an electrically-charged “look at me now” anthem, a kiss-off to Jessie’s haters (of which, there are many). I understand why some people don’t like Jessie J – her guppy mouth is bigger than Steven Tyler’s and sometimes she just doesn’t know when to shut up (her over-singing makes Xtina look subtle), but she actually does exercise some refreshing vocal restraint here. The “wild, wild, whoa-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh” hook is catchy, but otherwise the song is lacking the spark of past singles like, say, “Domino” (the standard to which all Jessie J songs are now held…according to me).
I will say this: Jessie looks pretty hot strutting around with her Susan Powter buzz cut, and rapper Big Sean does provide an entertaining guest verse. Check out the “Wild” music video below (which also features an appearance by UK rapper Dizzee Rascal). What do you think – is it lead single material?

Let me fill you in on Becky G: she’s Dr. Luke’s new protege. When Luke should have been focusing on Ke$ha’s “Warrior,” he was spending a lot of time in the studio with this little munchkin. She raps, with varying degrees of success in my opinion, but not in Kanye West’s! After Becky covered his song “Otis,” Kanye took to Twitter to proclaim, “THIS GIRL IS DOPE.” She’s worked with the likes of Cody Simpson and Cher Lloyd, and she recently released a cover version of Jennifer Lopez’s “Jenny From the Block” called “Becky From the Block.” It’s…fine. I think that’s about it.
So Becky just came out with a new original song called, “Play It Again.” Produced by Dr. Luke, Cirkut, and Max Martin (this girl is so lucky), “Play It Again” is all about suffering through the verses to get to the sweet, sweet pop chorus. And the bridge, ahh, the bridge! Pure pop perfection. Seriously, this song would be total ear candy if it weren’t for Becky’s rapping. She’s like what people find annoying about Ke$ha, only magnified 100 times. I’m not exactly sure what Luke sees in her. Sure, she’s cute, but that voice! I just can’t get into her yet – which is really hard for me because I love Luke and obviously he thinks there’s some real potential here!
Becky’s been working on her debut album for what seems like a long time now, but there’s still no sign of a lead single. I think “Play It Again,” like “Becky From the Block,” was just released to create buzz. Is it working? I don’t think so. But with people like Dr. Luke, Cirkut, and Max Martin behind her, this girl could definitely have a breakthrough hit – they’ve just got to find a way to tone down her annoying factor and give her an insanely catchy hook. I’m not writing Becky G off yet. She’s only 16, so she’s got plenty of time to figure things out. I’m keeping an open mind.

Hmm, flattery or shade? British boy band The Wanted premiered their brand new single “Walks Like Rihanna” this morning on Capital FM, and it’s built around the line, “She can’t sing, she can’t dance, but who cares? She walks like Rihanna.” Now just WHAT are these boys trying to say? I saw Rih in concert last month and I can assure you, she CAN sing and she CAN dance, she’s just gonna be an hour and a half late to the show!
All kidding aside, I don’t think the boys are really trying to shade Rihanna. She’s even bigger in the U.K. than she is in the U.S. and it would be a huge mistake (not to mention the fact that she would drag them to the pits on every form of social media imaginable). Still, the lyrics can be easily misconstrued and you better believe the Beyonce stans are having a field day.
MTV reports that “Walks Like Rihanna” is produced by hit-maker Dr. Luke, and to be honest, it sounds a little more One Direction than The Wanted, but I still like it. The, “Our hearts go boom, boom! Boom, boom!” bit is quite adorable.

According to Billboard, Katy Perry told an audience at ASCAP’s I Create Music Expo yesterday that she has written a new song called “Double Rainbow” for her upcoming third studio album. Apparently, Bonnie McKee came straight to the studio after a yoga session and told Katy that she felt like writing a song called “Double Rainbow.” And so they did. Amazing.
Katy also confirmed that she’s working closely with Max Martin and Dr. Luke on the album, as well as with Bonnie McKee, Greg Kurstin, Greg Wells, and, of course, Sia. Unfortunately, she’s only “halfway” through the recording process and doesn’t really feel pressure to finish anytime soon. Bummer, I was hoping for a summer single! Looks like a 4th quarter release is much more likely at this point. Let’s hope that the Icona Pop collaboration rumor turns out to be true! And of course, there’s always the possibility that Katy will be featured on Bonnie McKee’s new album…
I need new Katy and I don’t care who knows it!

…for the “The Smurfs 2” soundtrack. Let that sink in. Okay. The LA Times reports that even though “Ooh La La” will just be played over the end credits of the animated film, Spears has still enlisted the help of pop heavyweights Dr. Luke, Ammo, and Bonnie McKee. “The Smurfs 2” hits theaters on July 31st, so presumably the song will be out sometime shortly before then. I’m not quite sure why RCA decided to spill the beans on the track now, but okay.
On the one hand, it’s new Britney. On the other hand, it’s for “The Smurfs 2.” On the third hand, does this mean we have to wait until fall to hear the lead single from Album #8? That’s not exactly what I had in mind. Now I’m sad. But I guess I have “Ooh La La” to look forward to? In JULY??
Never mind, now I’m MAD. I’m going to need these pop girls to start acting right and release new music because one cannot survive on Avril Lavigne scraps alone!!
