Demos That Did It Better

britneypinkwig

Thanks to hackers and YouTube, pop fans are now able to listen to a slew of unfinished demo material that was probably never meant for public consumption.  It’s great (for us…not the artists).  Sometimes, a demo ends up being way more awesome than the finished product.  Sometimes, a demo never sees the light of day and it’s a massive injustice!  Check out a list of some of my favorite demos and unreleased jams after the jump. Music News: Katy Perry co-wrote Britney Spears’s “Passenger”

Producer Diplo just tweeted that he co-wrote Britney’s Spears’s recently leaked song, “Passenger” with Katy Perry and Sia!  That’s quite a pop songwriting trio.  I thought I detected some Sia backing vocals on the track, but I was too shy to speak up!  We already suspected that Katy spent some time in the studio with Sia and Diplo back in June, but when Diplo didn’t appear as a producer on Katy’s new album, “PRISM,” I just assumed that their collaborations had been left on the cutting room floor.  Not so!  One of their efforts, “Passenger,” was given to Britney Spears.  “Passenger” may not have fit on “PRISM,” but it suits Britney quite well.  In fact, I think it’s one of the most impressive songs we’ve heard from her in years!

That whole, “Britney Jean” is “my most personal record yet” business is kind of hurt by the fact that Britney apparently didn’t do any writing on “Passenger,” but no matter.  It’s still an awesome song and I’m thrilled to see that it made the final track listing for the album, which was unveiled yesterday.

Thanks to the good people over at Popjustice for breaking this story AND for taking a screen shot of Diplo’s tweet, as he has since deleted it!  Excellent work all around!

New Music: Britney Spears – “Perfume”

britneyspearsperfume

Britney Spears premiered the second single from her upcoming 8th studio album “Britney Jean” on Facebook this evening, and it’s a total home run.  Co-written with Sia Furler and produced by album executive producer will.i.am, “Perfume” is a lush ballad full of piano, stirring synths, sweeping strings, and Britney’s shockingly raw vocals (well, for her standards).  Seriously though, Britney Spears sounds like a human being again and there’s no trace of that strange British accent she occasionally puts on.  It’s incredibly refreshing. New Music: Sia – “Beautiful People Say” (Demo)

A new Sia demo titled, “Beautiful People Say” hit the net yesterday, and it’s a corker.  Initially attributed to David Guetta, Sia was quick to point out via Twitter that the song is not a Guetta production and was actually written for another artist.  Rihanna, perhaps?  Whoever it was written for, they’re a dope for passing it up!  “Beautiful people say, ‘Yes’,” is one of the best lines I’ve heard in a pop song in…I don’t even know how long!

Sia is the new Queen of pop music because she knows how to write about partying and drinking and loving and sexing in new, astonishing ways.  And that’s what it’s really all about, isn’t it?

Check out “Beautiful People Say” via YouTube above.  Do you think it could be a hit?

Music News: Beyonce previews new song “Standing on the Sun” for H&M

I’ll spare you the rant – Beyonce is a mess, this era is a mess, where is her management, re-hire Daddy Knowles.  Okay, I’m done.

Early this morning, Beyonce’s commercial for retailer H&M hit the web featuring a brand new song called, “Standing on the Sun.”  Popjustice reports that the track is written by Sia and produced by Greg Kurstin.  The song is light and summery – I like it, but I think I like “Grown Woman” better.

Naturally, Beyonce looks absolutely incredible rolling around in the sand in a barely-there bikini, I just wish she would put out a press release or something to clear up all this mess!  Will “Standing on the Sun” end up on Bey’s new album?  Your guess is as good as mine.

Stream Beyonce’s new H&M commercial via YouTube above and let me know what you think of “Standing on the Sun” in the comments!

Music News: Katy Perry writes new song “Double Rainbow”

Music News: Katy Perry writes new song "Double Rainbow"

According to Billboard, Katy Perry told an audience at ASCAP’s I Create Music Expo yesterday that she has written a new song called “Double Rainbow” for her upcoming third studio album.  Apparently, Bonnie McKee came straight to the studio after a yoga session and told Katy that she felt like writing a song called “Double Rainbow.”  And so they did.  Amazing.

Katy also confirmed that she’s working closely with Max Martin and Dr. Luke on the album, as well as with Bonnie McKee, Greg Kurstin, Greg Wells, and, of course, Sia.  Unfortunately, she’s only “halfway” through the recording process and doesn’t really feel pressure to finish anytime soon.  Bummer, I was hoping for a summer single!  Looks like a 4th quarter release is much more likely at this point.  Let’s hope that the Icona Pop collaboration rumor turns out to be true!  And of course, there’s always the possibility that Katy will be featured on Bonnie McKee’s new album…

I need new Katy and I don’t care who knows it!
